Dear HREC Internet Service Members,
The pandemic has caused a big increase in internet usage among our members.
Here are some tips to help you and your fellow subscribers have better throughput:
General Tips for Easing Bandwidth Concerns
- Start any downloads between 1a.m. and 4 a.m., including game downloads/patches and computer updates.
- Don’t stream videos while trying to telecommute or while in a remote classroom.
- Turn off devices and streams you aren’t using or don’t need. This helps the rest of your devices perform better and frees up bandwidth for other members who may be trying to work or attend classes via the web.
- Watch streaming shows as a family, rather than everyone streaming different things on their own devices. This will lower the traffic for your individual connection.
Avoid Rush-Hour Traffic on the Internet
Evening usage is always the highest. Evening peaks now are as much as 25% higher than they used to be. These peaks are lasting from 6-11 p.m. Previously, our peak was smaller and lasted less than an hour, usually between 8-9 p.m.
The early morning hours from 1 a.m. to about 7 a.m. continue to be our lowest usage hours. If you need to download a big file, we recommend starting it between 1 a.m. and 4 a.m.
Thank you for your patience and for doing your part by following the tips above. We’re working hard to provide you with the quality service you’ve come to expect from us.
