Libby CalnonDear Members,

What a busy month it’s been! We were glad to see many of you at the annual membership meetings of the Communications Access Co-op and Hood River Electric Co-op on March 13 and 14, respectively. Your participation and interest in our operations is appreciated and valued. Look for an article about the meeting in next month’s edition of Ruralite.

At our HREC annual meeting, members re-elected Pat Moore, Doug Mahurin and John McGhee as directors for the next three years. We are glad to have their knowledge and experience guiding us. During the meeting, we also recognized two employee milestones: Serviceman David Porter was recognized for 25 years of service to HREC members, and Lineman Jeremy McCleary was recognized for 15 years of service.

Later in March, Directors Doug Mahurin and Roger Nelson joined me at a meeting of the Oregon Rural Electric Cooperative Association. ORECA’s 18 member cooperatives serve nearly 70 percent of the land mass in Oregon and about 11 percent of its population. Each March, we gather in Salem for a legislative rally. Doug, Roger and I met with Rep. Anna Williams and Sen. Chuck Thomsen to discuss proposed legislation that could affect our members. We are grateful for their willingness to engage with us to better understand the potential effects of proposed legislation on you, our members.

While our directors and office staff were busy with annual meetings and legislative rallies, our linemen were busy providing mutual aid to Lane Electric Cooperative in Eugene following a severe snowstorm that caused tremendous damage to several utilities. Foreman Doug Balzer, Lineman Austin Porter and Apprentice Lineman Tannar Riekena spent 11 days working in the McKenzie River area as one of 23 line crews helping Lane Electric get the lights back on.

As we celebrate Lineworker Appreciation Day on Monday, April 8, please join me in thanking our linemen for their excellent dedication and service, and for their willingness to work long hours in difficult conditions to help cooperative members across the state. We are proud of the great work they do!

On behalf of all of us at HREC, thank you for the opportunity to serve you.
